Conservation Walk at the Pablo Barrios Refuge

Description

The Pablo Barrios Wildlife Refuge is a sanctuary for wildlife that was declared a protected area by the National Environmental Authority of Panama in 2009. This area is located across from the Iguana Island Wildlife Refuge, established in 1981. Its name honors Pablo Arturo Barrios, a passionate environmentalist from Pedasí who dedicated his life to preserving the natural biodiversity of Los Santos.

This refuge encompasses 15,026 hectares that are home to diverse marine and coastal ecosystems. During the conservation hike in the Pablo Barrios Wildlife Refuge, you'll admire dunes, salt flats, estuaries, and mangroves. The guides accompanying you have been trained by Pro Eco Azuero, a local conservation group. The goal is to raise awareness about the refuge while generating sustainable income.

Four species of turtles nest in this area and are monitored by Tortugas Pedasi. The wetlands are home to numerous species of waterfowl. White-tailed deer, peccaries, and coatis can be found in the secondary forests. Iguanas and other reptiles are quite common along the forest edges and in coastal areas.

Schedule: 5:00 to 7:00 a.m. or 6:00 to 8:00 a.m.

What to bring: Comfortable clothing, appropriate footwear for walking on sand (or you can go barefoot), biodegradable insect repellent, water, swimsuit, and towel (if you want to swim at Arenal Beach after the tour).

Important information: A minimum of two people is required for the Conservation Walk at the Pablo Barrios Refuge. The minimum recommended age for this tour is 15 years old. Younger children can participate as long as they are able to walk 5 kilometers on the sand. This tour requires a moderate level of fitness. There is no shade along the route, so it starts very early. This also allows for better wildlife and birdwatching while it is still cool.
