Description

About 35,000 sea turtles lay their eggs each year on Cañas Island, laying approximately 600,000 eggs. Half of the eggs are kept in a nursery, and the other half remain in their natural habitat. The main turtle species are the olive ridley, hawksbill, loggerhead, and black and green sea turtles. Watching the newborn turtles hatch and take their first steps into the Pacific Ocean is an unforgettable experience.

Cañas Island is one of the eleven most important nesting sites in the world for sea turtles. These eleven beaches witness arrivals, when many turtles arrive to lay their eggs. Panama has two beaches that witness this phenomenon. The other is La Marinera, also located in the district of Tonosí in the province of Los Santos. You can take our tour to see the turtles laying eggs at night on Cañas Island from July 15 to December 15.
