Booking.comWhen is the best time for fishing in Pedasi?
Unlike other countries, Panama has just two seasons: dry and wet. The dry season runs from December through April. December is a transition month so you get the best of both seasons. Azuero is known as the dry arch of Panama with a tropical savanna climate. It gets very little rain from January until April.
Starting January the summer breeze kicks up making the sea choppy. It gets quite hot but it may not be as noticeable since the wind makes it pleasant to be on the sea. Fishing in Pedasi is quite limited during the summer time. We also get cold currents coming from Costa Rica and the Humbolt from the south, which change the temperature of the Pacific Ocean making the water colder.
“Winter” or wet season is the best time to go fishing in Pedasi. Don’t worry because it usually won’t rain all day like other parts of Panama. April and May are transition months which can be suitable for fishing in Pedasi. July through October are the best months to catch fish in Pedasi. During this time we also get the humpback whales which can be seen easily. It is also possible to see sea turtles and dolphins during your boat ride.
What fish can you catch in Pedasi?
Pedasi is one of the best places for fishing in Panama. It is known as the tuna coast. The Japanese set up the Achotines Laboratories to study the species right before Playa Venao. It is possible to catch yellowfin tuna year around, both inshore and offshore. There is also bigeye tuna in the area. Another species that is available year round is the Pacific jack crevasse.
Those looking to catch wahoo should visit in November and December for the best odds. Although it is possible to find this fish year round.
Mahi mahi or dorado has its peak season from October through December. During this time it is possible to go to Arenal beach in the evenings and buy fish directly from the fishermen if you do not want to go fishing yourself.

How is a fishing trip in Pedasi?
Most of the fishing in Pedasi is done in panga boats which are fiberglass open boats that are about 8 meters long. They are comfortable for picking up passengers even from the sand as is the case in Arenal or Mariabe beach where there is no port. El Ciruelo has a boat ramp and the port of Cañas is also equipped. Most of these boats, at least the ones we use, have a roof. They are basic boats but they are suitable for fishing in Panama.
Boat tours include a cooler with ice for the fish and a cooler for food and drinks which usually must be brought by participants. Since these are smaller boats they are suitable for around four fishermen, not more than that. Bigger boats are available as well, but they cost more, so it depends on your budget.
Fishing in Pedasi can be done as a full day or a half day activity depending on how far out the fishermen want to go. It can also be combined with a tour to Isla Iguana or Isla Cañas. Please let us know if you will be bringing your own fishing equipment including rods and tackle or you need for this to be provided in order to give you a proper quote on the costs of a fishing trip in Pedasi.
