Description

Mangrove Beekeeping Tour in Cañas Island is a unique tour which is only offered in this island in the province of Los Santos. Visitors will cross to Cañas Island and then go on a boat to another island where the apiary is located.

This initiative was included in the Sustainable Azuero Project which was organized by Panama’s Ministry of Environment and PNUD. The western honey bee or European honey bee (Apis mellifera) help save the mangroves by pollinating them. Beekeeping also provides resources for local families.

Mangrove honey is very unique and it can only be produced in tropical climates. Its taste is bitter and salty due to the marine environment. This honey has a light brown color and is quite thick. Mangrove honey is very high in antioxidants and it is also antiviral and antibacterial. Some people even say it has aphrodisiac properties. Beehives must be placed near mangroves trees so the bees can collect the nectar from the mangrove flowers. The bees will bring it back to the hive to make honey. You will learn about traditional honey production in the Mangrove Beekeeping Tour in Cañas Island.
