Once upon a time only surfers used to go to Playa Venao. They were the first to discover this incredible beach which was quite a drive from Panama City. Playa Venao surf is now well known, but it is not crowded yet.
Located 30 minutes from Pedasi and around four and a half or five and a half hours from Panama City (depending on traffic), Playa Venao is not the easiest surf beach to get to. Once you arrive, you may want to stay. There is a shuttle from Panama City to Playa Venao or you can rent a car if you want to explore more surf beaches in Azuero.
Surf in Playa Venao
Playa Venao surf is suitable for beginners, intermediate and experts since the beach actually has three breaks. It is best to surf during mid tide since waves break very close to the shore in low tide and they tend to close out. Waves at the edges of the cove are more mellow, if the middle area becomes too strong. It can be six feet in the middle of the beach, great for experienced surfers, while beginners can surf at the far edges.
The south is the best swell direction in Playa Venao. When the south swell hits, expect a fast breaking, hollow barrel that provides a perfect surfing experience. During a serious swell, this beach can become suitable for advanced surfers only. Wind comes mostly from the north, so there are offshore winds almost year round. There are other surf beaches in Azuero nearby that can provide good waves.
Playa Venao surf is best from February through August with bigger and more consistent swells. The worst waves are September, October and November. However, it is still possible to surf on this beach from November through March, especially for beginners.
Playa Venao Surf Lessons
Those wanting to take surfing lessons in Panama can head to Playa Venao. This beach offers high quality sandy bottom breaks, just like Playa El Estero in Santa Catalina. In our opinion these are the two best beaches to learn how to surf in Panama. Bocas del Toro also offers surf classes but many surf spots there have rocks.

There are several surf schools in Playa Venao. Playa Venao surf lessons are offered daily. They are about an hour and fifteen minutes long where you will get fifteen minutes of theory and an hour of practice. Beginner surfers will learn on the foam located on the left side of the beach where the waves are smaller. Your instructor will teach you how to stand and how to catch a wave before it breaks.
Those who want to improve their surfing skills can book a surf camp in Playa Venao or multi-day lessons. It is possible to do three, five, seven, 10 or 15 days of surf classes in Playa Venao. Price of single day or multi-day classes depends on how many people are in the group. Experienced surfers can rent surf boards in Playa Venao. It is also possible to do a Playa Venao stand up paddle tour with a guide or rent a SUP board for the day.
